Second TUMO Educational Robotics Workshop by BOGATECH and NOUTEC, Yerevan, Armenia

TUMO Center for Creative Technologies is a unique innovative place at the heart of Yerevan, Armenia, equipped with state-of-the-art digital technology and with intelligently well-designed educational programs where young people can learn and produce creative content and media applications.
The second TUMO educational robotics workshop, a collaborative initiative between TUMO and NOUTEC, included 3 advanced students of BOGATECH from Barcelona, who were incredibly well hosted by a TUMO student, and complemented educational robotics with a new educational activity based on “Systems Thinking”, which provides students the tools to think, organize, structure and understand complex systems. 60 students divided into two groups started an intensive introduction course to LEGO Mindstorms NXT and an intensive introduction course to LabVIEW for the group of advanced students. The course run during 12 days in sessions of 3 hours and it was finished with a collaborative robotics project joining the two groups, which gave the students the possibility to explain a story using robots in a performance based on system thinking methodology. The final project allowed the students to put into practice all the knowledge and concepts learnt during the course about robotics and system thinking, was a good exercise to learn teamwork and self-organization, and was presented publicly the last day to TUMO students, parents, Armenian press and TV. The public presentation gives the students the opportunity to explain their work in public as part of the workshop's educational goals, and this time, the presentation included a theater performance where the students acted with their robots explaining the story of the decline of Easter Island.
The workshop experience is always very fascinating and not only the students learn a lot having fun, but due to the intensive timetable, it is a great human and cultural experience for all of us. Barcelona students had an incredibly good time, they learnt a lot in many different aspects, they made a lot of friends, and they discover a new culture. The robots were programmed only in three days and the theater performance was really incredible, especially since it was organized by the students themselves in two days only, including the costumes. We hope to continue collaborating in the future and strengthen the links between TUMO and NOUTEC, to provide students of Yerevan and Barcelona a new field of creative thinking and a multicultural experience. El segon taller de robòtica educativa TUMO, una iniciativa de col·laboració entre TUMO i NOUTEC, va incloure 3 estudiants avançats de BOGATECH a Barcelona, que van ser increïblement ben allotjats per un estudiant de TUMO, i va complementar la robòtica educativa amb una nova activitat basada en el “Pensament Sistèmic”, que proporciona als alumnes les eines per pensar, organitzar, estructurar i comprendre sistemes complexes. 60 estudiants dividits en dos grups van començar un curs intensiu d'introducció a LEGO Mindstorms NXT i un curs intensiu d’introducció a LabVIEW pel grup d’alumnes avançats. El curs es va realitzar durant 12 dies en sessions de 3 hores i va acabar amb un projecte de robòtica col·laborativa ajuntant els dos grups, la qual cosa va proporcionar als alumnes la possibilitat d’explicar una història utilitzant robots en una representació basada en la metodologia del pensament sistèmic. El projecte final va permetre als estudiants posar en pràctica tots els coneixements i conceptes apresos durant el curs de robòtica i pensament sistèmic, va ser un bon exercici per aprendre a treballar en equip i a organitzar-se, i es va presentar públicament l'últim dia als estudiants de TUMO, les mares i pares, i la premsa i TV armènies. La presentació pública dóna als estudiants l'oportunitat d'explicar el seu treball en públic com a part de l'objectiu pedagògic del taller, i aquest cop, la presentació va incloure una representació teatral on els estudiants varen actuar juntament amb els seus robots explicant la història del declivi de l’Illa de Pasqua.
L'experiència del taller és sempre molt fascinant i no tant sols els estudiants aprenen molt divertint-se, sinó que donat l'horari intensiu, és una gran experiència humana i cultural per a tots nosaltres. Els alumnes de Barcelona van gaudir molt, van aprendre molt en molts aspectes diferents, van fer molts amics, i van descobrir una nova cultura. Els robots es van programar només en tres dies i la representació teatral va ser realment increïble, especialment perquè la van organitzar els mateixos alumnes en només dos dies, incloent-hi les disfresses. Esperem continuar col·laborant en el futur i enfortir els lligams entre TUMO i NOUTEC, per proporcionar als estudiants de Yerevan i Barcelona un nou camp de pensament creatiu i una experiència multicultural.
